Harmison sets up intriguing chase

Durham edged towards a surprise victory against Hampshire in Division One of the LV County Championship, set up after a six-wicket haul from the resurgent Steve Harmison.

Durham had looked up against it at Chester-le-Street, trailing by 37 on first innings, and seeing the division’s bottom side reach 101 for two when they batted for a second time.

But Harmison fired, taking 6-122 as the visitors were bowled out for 256 to leave Durham a target of 294 to win.

Despite the loss of Michael Di Venuto just before lunch, the home side were 114 for three just after tea, following a stand of 58 between Will Smith (33) and Neil McKenzie (40no).

McKenzie was joined by his skipper Dale Benkenstein when Smith was bowled by Greg Lamb.

Durham require another 109 runs with 4 wickets remaining.
