Fit for Action
Academy fast bowler Jake Lilley talks to Chloe Glass.
This is the first time that one of my columns has been written by someone else, but like most of us I suffer from the occasional domestic crisis. Rather than cancel my interview with Jake Lilley at short notice I was able to persuade young Hampshire member Chloe Glass, at The Rose Bowl on work experience, to step into the breach.
Chloe: So how has the season been for you?
Jake: It’s gone quite well. Being out injured half way through the season was disappointing but when I returned I managed to take wickets regularly. I also participated in a few friendly games and two Championship games for the Seconds. It was a great experience as I was able to play with good players.
Chloe: How was playing in the South West Under 17s?
Jake: I played up at Loughborough and we won the Festival. As the tournament went on it got better for me. No wickets were taken in the first game, I got one in the second game and four in the final. It was a good all round week. It was very fun and a good experience, although I didn’t get to bat much.
Chloe: How does playing alongside and watching players such as James Vince and Danny Briggs affect your development and goals?
Jake: Vince and Briggs are good examples to follow. They show that you can make it into the Firsts with hard work in the Academy. Dawson is a fine example as well. It’s been good to play with them as they have learnt more playing at a higher level.
Chloe: What are your winter plans?
Jake: The main concern this winter is fitness. There are seven weeks off before Christmas when I will concentrate mainly on fitness. After Christmas batting takes the priority but there will be plenty of time to practise my bowling techniques in the nets.
Chloe: What are your objectives for next season?
Jake: Next season hopefully I will be able to play more Seconds games and have a senior role in the Academy. Mainly I look to take more wickets and stay injury free.
