A David Griffiths five-wicket haul helped re-state his claim for a first-team return as he ripped through an Ireland A top order on day one of this Second XI friendly at The Rose Bowl.
Supported by Irish under 19 opening bowler, Jordan Coughlan – who’s on a trial at Hampshire - and debutant Anguillan Kelbert Walters, both of whom took a wicket each, Griff conceded just 74 runs in his 18 overs, leaving the visitors on 111 for 7.
Returning England U19 wicket-keeper, Adam Rouse also took four catches for the hosts.
That was before an unbroken 8th wicket partnership of 106 between Reinhardt Strydom (53*) and wicket-keeper Rory McCann (44*) helped rescue the visitors.
On a rain affected day which saw 49 overs lost to rain, Ireland had managed to rescue a previously flagging innings to finish the day on 217 for 7.
