Giles White confirmed as Hampshire Manager and discussions with Duncan Fletcher in regard to a consultancy role are underway.

Hampshire Cricket is pleased to confirm Giles White has been appointed as Team Manager for next season.

White stepped up from his role as Second XI Coach following Team Manager Paul Terry’s decision to stand down in July.  The team enjoyed a successful end to the season, finishing second in the NatWest Pro40 competition and third in the LV County Championship.

The 36 year old was born in Barnstaple, Devon and studied at Loughborough University.  He played for Devon between 1988 until 1993, and Somerset between 1991 to 1993.  White joined Hampshire in 1994 and made his first-class debut against South Africa at Northlands Road.  He played for Hampshire until 2002 scoring over 6,000 first-class runs including nine centuries.  Following his retirement from first-class cricket, White joined the coaching staff in 2002.

Responding to intense media speculation, Hampshire Cricket can also confirm that it is engaged in discussions with former England Head Coach, Duncan Fletcher, with a view to a consultancy/advisory role over the period of next season. The purpose of this role is to review the structure of Hampshire’s cricket department and to conduct an audit of the Club’s coaching methods and procedures throughout the entire player development process. It is anticipated that Duncan will work closely with Giles White and Tony Middleton (Hampshire Academy Director) periodically throughout the season and make his recommendations and proposals to the Board of Directors next September.

Duncan Fletcher, 60, former captain of the Zimbabwean cricket team is credited with rejuvenating the fortunes of the English team under his management.

Under Fletcher the England cricket team achieved famous series victories away to Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa between 2000 to 2004. In 2004 England won an English record 8 consecutive tests, beating New Zealand 3-0 and West Indies 4-0 at home respectively, before winning the first test in South Africa. His most famous and largest achievement, came in September 2005 when he became the first coach of the English team to win an Ashes series for 18 years when England secured 2-1 victory over Australia.  Fletcher resigned as England coach at the end of 2007.

Referring to his appointment as Team Manager, Giles White commented:

“It feels great.  It’s been a long six weeks and things have worked out well.  I’m looking forward to doing it next year.

For me to be able to have an influence on how the Club goes forward is very exciting.”

Hampshire Chairman, Rod Bransgrove said:

“Giles did a superb job as Caretaker Manager during the last couple of months of the season and the team has responded positively to his style and commitment. He has therefore earned the right take the position on a full-time basis and I am sure that all Hampshire supporters will wish him every success.

I can confirm, also, that we are in discussion with Duncan Fletcher regarding a consultancy and advisory role with Hampshire. The purpose of this role is to review the structure of our cricket department and to conduct an audit of our coaching methods and procedures throughout the entire player development process.

In Giles White and Tony Middleton (Hampshire Academy Director) we have two excellent young coaches and managers of great potential and both are looking forward to the possibility of working with Duncan next season with a view to optimizing our cricket management and development capabilities”
