Glamorgan Dragons v Hampshire Hawks FP Trophy 18th May
Match report by BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James at Cardiff
Hampshire kept alive their qualification hopes for the knockout stages of the Friends Provident Trophy, with a comfortable four wicket victory over Glamorgan at the renamed Swalec Stadium.
Captain Dimi Mascarenhas gave the home side first use of a pitch offering the seam bowlers movement early on. Despite this, Hampshire only had the wicket of David Hemp to show for the first 37 overs work. Hemp went caught behind by Michael Brown off Mascarenhas for 19.
Michael Powell and Matthew Wood then put on a second wicket partnership worth 164 in just over 30 overs. They never threatened to break free from a Hampshire attack although inexperienced, bowled with better control than in recent one day matches.
Academy all rounder Hamzer Riazuddin completed ten accurate overs for 42. Greg Lamb bowled economically, 27 runs coming off his eight overs. But it was Mascarenhas who was able to combine both economy with wickets, finishing with two for 38 off his ten overs, adding the wicket of Maynard to his earlier wicket of Hemp.
Michael Powell finished with 114 not out off 128 balls, his first one day hundred, as the home sides total of 229 for five looked 20 to 30 runs short.
So it proved as Michael Lumb and Michael Carberry gave Hampshire a great start putting on 96 for the first wicket in 19 overs. But then two wickets fell for just one run as first Lumb and then Ervine fell in quick succession.
Carberry and Chris Benham then got Hampshire back on track, until Carberry became off spinner Jamie Dalrymple's third wicket when he was bowled round his legs for 65. Benham again batted with maturity as he made 39, before being the fifth wicket to fall, caught at square cover off David Harrison.
The strength and depth in the batting order showed as Michael Brown, batting at number six (35 not out), Jimmy Adams at number seven (22) and Mascarenhas at eight steered Hampshire home with ten balls to spare.
A closer margin then had seemed probable earlier in the Hampshire reply.
Mascarenhas told BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James: "If you want to be a good team, then you need to win games like this two down. We should have one a lot easier than we did."
