Green Jackets - 2008 Junior Knockout

The County Golf Club v Test Valley Golf Club

The Green Jackets tournament is a County knockout competition.  The format is teams of 3 playing individual scratch match play over 18 holes.  The competition is very prestigious amongst junior golfers and this year has a field of 42 teams.  The finals are held on Tuesday 22nd July at Hockley and the winners go onto play in the EGU Junior Club Championship at Harewood Downs on 9-10 August.

Saturday saw The County's team of Matt Squires, Steve Higgins and Jo Cummins compete against their first opponents, Test Valley.  The County were up against a very strong and experienced team but felt quietly confident on home soil.

Through 9 holes all matches were tight, with one match down, one up and Steve Higgins at stalemate!!

Matt was up against an incredibly tough opponent and although 4 down with 6 to play he carried the match through to the 18th, which was halved in 3's and a very unfortunate loss.

This put pressure on our most senior player, Steve Higgins, who is on a consistent run of form.  He stepped up to the plate with a very convincing win of 5 & 3 against one of the South of England's newest players, Eddie Holland.

This left Jo Cummins to bring the win home for The County Juniors and, as the most steady player at the club, he went onto win his match 2 & 1 to book the Juniors into the next round against either Tylney Park or Wellow Golf Club.

A huge well done from the whole Golf Club to Matt, Steve and Jo.
