Hampshire's bid to reach the quarter-finals of the Twenty20 Cup remains firmly on track, after a comfortable six-wicket win over Surrey Brown Caps at the Rose Bowl.
Another man-of-the-match performance from opener Michael Lumb (63) enabled the Hawks to pass Surrey's below-par total with eleven balls to spare, and move level on points with Kent and Middlesex at the top of the South Group.
Opting to bat first, the visitors were indebted to Scott Newman, who hit a 51-ball half century, before immediately falling to returning Hampshire paceman Chris Tremlett. Nantie Hayward picked up where he left off at Richmond the previous day, picking up the key wickets of Brown Caps' skipper Mark Ramprakash (19) and Usman Afzaal (12), before the big-hitting Pakistani Abdul Razzaq (2) fell to an outrageous one-handed boundary catch by Michael Carberry.
Billy Taylor mopped up two late wickets, as Surrey stuttered their way to 147 for 7 from their 20 overs, on what appeared a good wicket and with a short boundary on the Nursery side of the ground.
When Lumb crashed the first ball of the Hampshire innings to the boundary, Surrey were immediately on the back foot - a position emphasised when Jade Dernbach's opening over went for 21 runs. Lumb and Ian Harvey smashed 54 from the first 5 overs and put on 80 together, before Harvey (34) fell in identical fashion to the previous day, offering a return catch to spinner Matt Spriegel.
Lumb's half-century came up in just 38 balls, and in reaching 63 he passed not only his previous highest T20 score for Hampshire, but also 300 runs in the competition this season. He was unable to see the chase through though, as he edged a Chris Schofield long-hop to the keeper, but Michael Carberry safely negotiated Hampshire home, ending 28 not out.
The Hawks' final two South Group matches are against the Essex Eagles. The first is at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday (7pm), followed by the return at Chelmsford on Friday (5.30pm).
