Hampshire 2nd XI v Glamorgan 2nd XI June 20th
Hampshire enjoy a perfect wednesday as while Shane Warne's men were doing the business at the Rose Bowl and earning a well-deserved trip to Lord's, the Second Eleven were well on the way to completing a resounding victory over Glamorgan with a day to spare at Chapel Gate, Bournemouth; losing only one wicket to a bowler in the match and taking twenty of their own. All this after losing the toss and being invited to bat!
Glamorgan appeared to mis-read the pitch on the first day: it's greenness tempting the Welshmen to invite Hampshire to bat on a sunny, blustery, day. After a testing opening spell from the promising youngster James Harris, the experienced opening pair of Jimmy Adams and Michael Brown laid the foundations for an afternoon of confident batting. They eventually accumulated an opening partnership of 271 at four an over before captain Adams (115 in 188 balls) departed in attempting to increase the run rate. Kevin Latouf (44) joined Brown in a further partnership of 116 before the former was run out and Adams promptly declared; leaving Brown undefeated on a career best 215 not out, in 286 balls, featuring 2 sixes and 27 fours, as Hampshire reached an imposing 387-2.
There were still eleven overs in the day and A dispirited young Glamorgan side were no match for James Tomlinson (3-16 in six hostile overs) as Glamorgan closed at a perilous 27-3.
Hampshire continued in the same vein on Day 2; Tomlinson (5-48) and David Griffiths (3-43) quickly reducing the visitors to 46-6 and then 88-8. But then wicketkeeper Will Bragg (missed at point early on in his innings) launched an effective counter attack to the tune of 92 runs at almost a run a ball. He shared a 68 run partnership for the ninth wicket up to the lunch break with Aaron Shingler, whose share of the partnership amounted to 2 runs. Griffiths returned to the attack after lunch and swiftly finished off the innings at 161.
Glamorgan followed on 226 behind and fared little better in their second dig. This time the early destroyer was Griffiths, who took the first 4 wickets as Glamorgan struggled to 60-5. A little late resistance from the Glamorgan lower order; in particular Adam Harrison, whose 47 included 3 sixes; took the score up to 168-7, but when he departed Griffiths (a career best 6-41), Hamza Riazuddin (2-48) and Tomlinson (1-29) and Gavin Tonge (1-23) soon finished the innings off at 189.
This left Hampshire victors by an innings and 37 runs; maximum points taking them to joint leadership of the Second Eleven Championship along with Somerset.
