Hampshire 2nd XI v Kent 2nd XI 12th July

Hampshire 2nd XI v Kent 2nd XI on 12th July

Hampshire wound up what turned out to be the last match of the campaign (the re-arranged game v Surrey at Cheam on 20 July was again abandoned) with a resounding win and a double in three days against Kent; Hampshire's only wins of the season.

The weather relented enough for a prompt start (although lunch was extended by half an hour due to a shower) and Kent, having won the toss, had Hampshire in trouble at 4-2 after the first over, bowled by the experienced Martin Saggers: returning after his loan spell at Essex. Kevin Latouf (68) set about repairing the damage against the swinging ball first with captain Jimmy Adams (25), then Mitchell Stokes (21), and late acceleration was provided by Tom Burrows (59 in 53 balls) and Liam Dawson (26), who hit the only 6 of the day. Hampshire were bowled out for 239 in exactly 50 overs; Saggers taking 3-37 and Lee 3-32.

A strong Hampshire attack then blew a young Kent top order away as 19-0 quickly became 19-3 thanks to a team hat-trick: David Griffiths (6-2-17-3) taking two wickets in 2 balls and James Tomlinson (5-1-16-2) one. Soon Kent had subsided to 36-5 and there was no let up as David Balcombe (8-3-24-3) and Richard Morris (7-3-17-0) continued to bowl accurately until Kent found themselves in a hopeless position at 65-9. An 18 run partnership for the last wicket - the second highest of the innings - took Kent to the heights of 83 before Greg Lamb (1-2) finished off the innings to leave Hampshire victors by the comfortable margin of 156 runs to go with the 49 run victory at Canterbury. Hampshire finished second bottom in their group which was eventually won by Sussex; who had defeated Hampshire by 3 wickets at Horsham earlier in the week.
