HAMPSHIRE HAWKS (85 all out) LOST TO SUSSEX SHARKS (87-1) BY NINE WICKETS

Kris Temple reports from The Rose Bowl

Hampshire Hawks slumped to their lowest ever Twenty20 total, as they were overwhelmed by local rivals Sussex Sharks at a damp Rose Bowl in front of a crowd of around 10,000.

Having won the toss, the Hawks were given a good start by Michael Lumb, who crashed six early fours in his 24-ball innings of 32. But after his and Ian Harvey's departures, Hampshire lost four wickets with the score on 43. Sussex left-arm seamer Chris Liddle did the damage, removing Lumb, Chris Benham and Sean Ervine in a treble-wicket-maiden. When Michael Carberry also went for nought, the writing was on the wall, and despite the best efforts of captain Nic Pothas, who hung around to make 19, Hampshire were skittled for just 85. That surpassed their previous lowest total in the 20-over format, 97 against Essex at Chelmsford. Liddle picked up figures of 4 for 15 in 3.2 overs.

In reply, Hampshire needed quick wickets, but despite the loss of Chris Nash to Hamza Riazuddin for 12, Murray Goodwin (46*) and Sharks' skipper Chris Adams took Sussex to victory in just 9.3 overs.

Hampshire captain Nic Pothas told BBC RADIO SOLENT:

"We've let supporters down, but things like this can come up to remind you that you havent done anything special. It's a bite on the backside. We've only won three games of cricket, we havent done anything outstanding. It's tough to put your finger on what went wrong, we just had a bit of bad luck. Tonight the edges and catches went to fielders. We'll put this one to bed, and hopefull we'll bring our A-game on Sunday against Middlesex."

The Hawks' next game is that trip to Middlesex Crusaders on Sunday. The match at Richmond begins at 2.30, and you can hear live commentary on BBC Radio Solent.  Follow the link from our homepage to follow all the ball by ball action.
