Hampshire end on a high note

Sun, Jun 25  Hampshire v Glamorgan

Hampshire, the defending Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy holders, ended their 2006 campaign in the competition on a high note, brushing visitors Glamorgan aside by 165 runs with 18 overs to spare on Sunday.

A superb opening partnership of 147 in 23 overs between Michael Brown and Michael Carberry set blow-strength Hampshire up for a formidable total of 310-7 off their 50 overs. It is the county's biggest score in one-day cricket during their six seasons at The Rose Bowl.

James Tomlinson, who finished with figures of 4-47, then snapped up four of the first six wickets and off-spinner Greg Lamb three of the last four as Glamorgan were bowled out for 145 in 32 overs.

Brown celebrated his call-up by scoring 76, which included nine fours, off 77 balls, while Carberry's 70-ball innings of 69 contained nine fours and a six over mid-wicket.

Chris Benham, batting at No.3, was another player to justify his inclusion in a much-changed team. His unbeaten 73 came off 68 balls and he shared stands of 40 with Lamb (25) and 52 with skipper Shaun Udal, who made 34.

Glamorgan's reply capitulated rapidly to 75-6 in the 19th over. Tomlinson and Billy Taylor, the new-ball pair, did the early damage, Taylor trapping New Zealnd international Brendan McCullum leg-before for 8 on his county debut and Tomlinson having David Hemp (19) brilliantly caught by Benham low down in the slips. Reserve wicketkeeper Tom Burrows took a catch and then stumped Robert Croft, the Glamorgan captain.

It was a fifth win in nine Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy matches for Hampshire this season. They finished fourth in the nine-team South Conference table, despite being without Shane Warne, John Crawley, Sean Ervine, Nic Pothas, Dimi Mascarenhas, Chris Tremlett and James Bruce for this final match.

HAMPSHIRE 310-7 (50 overs): Brown 76, Benham 73 not out, Carberry 69. GLAMORGAN 145 (32 overs): Tomlinson 4-47, Lamb 3-33, Taylor 2-26.
