Dimitri Mascarenhas, the Hampshire all-rounder, was named man-of-the-match after Gloucestershire were demolished by 90 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method in a rain-interrupted Nat-West Pro40 League match under the Bristol floodlights on Monday.
Hampshire totalled 226-6 off a reduced 33 overs and then dismissed Gloucestershire for 114 as they chased a revised target of 205 off 28 overs. This fourth successive victory boosted Hampshire's promotion bid, while their high-flying opponents suffered a first defeat after five straight wins.
Chris Benham, who opened the Hampshire innings, was fifth out for 51 immediately after hitting the second of his two sixes. That made the score 106-5 in the 20th over.
The total had moved on to 144-6 when Mascarenhas joined Dominic Thornely in a rousing unbeaten stand of 82 in six overs. Thornely's 60 not out and Mascarenhas' brutal unbeaten 43 off 21 balls both contained four fours and two sixes.
When Gloucestershire batted, Chris Tremlett quickly removed the dangerous Craig Spearman before Hampshire's other opening bowler, James Bruce, snapped up the next four wickets--including Phil Weston and Chris Taylor in the seventh over--to reduce the home side to 53-5. The inspired Bruce finished with 4-29 off six overs.
Despite Steve Adshead hitting a bold 30, Hampshire never released their firm tight
grip on the match. Sean Ervine picked up three wickets and there were two for skipper Shane Warne who earlier had been run out first ball.
HAMPSHIRE 226-6 (33 overs): Thornely 60 not out, Benham 51, Mascarenhas 43 not out. GLOUCESTERSHIRE 114 (22.5 overs): Fisher 30, Bruce 4-29, Ervine 3-22, Warne 2-15.
* Hampshire's next Pro40 match is at home to high-flying Worcestershire under The Rose Bowl floodlights on Wednesday, September 13. Their final fixture is against Yorkshire at Headingley on Sunday, September 1.
