Hampshire Hawks v Gloucestershire Gladiators FP Trophy 4th May

Hampshire Hawks v Gloucestershire Gladiators Friend's Provident clash at The Rose Bowl Hampshire win by 5 wickets!

Hampshire Hawks v Gloucestershire Gladiators Friend's Provident clash at The Rose Bowl: Sunday 4 May 2008 (50-over match) (1-day match)

Result: Hampshire won by 5 wickets

In one of the most thrilling ends to a one day game at The Rose Bowl, Hampshire delivered their first win in the Friends Provident Trophy when they beat Gloucestershire by five wickets with just three balls to spare.

Chris Benham and Nic Pothas saw Hampshire past their revised victory target of 240 off 30 overs, with a fifth wicket partnership worth 98 in just 9 overs. In the process Hampshire moved off the foot of the South and West Division table.

When Pothas was out for 43 with the score on 233 in the 29th over, victory was virtually ensured leaving Benham (54 not out off just 27 balls) and Gregg Lamb (8 not out off 3 balls) to score the remaining nine runs for victory.

Michael Carberry and Michael Lumb had again given Hampshire a solid platform with a opening partnership of 52 in seven overs after rain between innings had lopped 20 overs off Hampshire's reply.

Lumb fell for 30. Kevin Pietersen chlipped in 23, before Carberry was the fourth man out for 60.

Earlier Hampshire again struggled in the field with their bowlers failing to get to grips with the Gloucestershire batting line up.

The visitors 50 overs total of 350 for 5 was the highest for them against Hampshire in this competition.

Their total was built around 105 from Alex Gidman and 85 from the Australian Marcus North. It looked to be more than enough but they didn't reckon on the performances of Benham, Pothas and Carberry.

Chris Benham told BBC Radio Solent Kevan James:

'I went out there with us needing over 10 an over and I had nothing to lose. When Nick joined me we thought we'd give it a crack and hit two bounderies an over and thank god it worked'
