BROWN LANDMARK AS HANTS STRUGGLE

Hampshire face an uphill fight in their Liverpool/Victoria County Championship match against Kent at The Rose Bowl after suffering a dramatic collapse on Day 2 on Wednesday.

Replying to Kent's formidable 495, Hampshire reached 99-1 before suddenly slumping to 139-7. They recovered to close on 186-7, but were still 160 runs short of the follow-on target.

Michael Brown (42) and ex-Kent batsman Michael Carberry (46) shared an opening stand of 79 before Carberry became the first of Tredwell's four victims.

Brown, having reached 1,000 Championship runs in a season for the first time, then drove a catch to mid-off--Tredwell was again the bowler--to trigger the collapse.

Michael Lumb and Jimmy Adams departed without addition to the total and Chris Benham, Nic Pothas and Sean Ervine were soon back in the pavilion as Kent tightened their grip.

But Hampshire skipper Shane Warne (28 not out) and young debutant David Balcombe (19 not out) then joined forces to share an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 47. Warne hit Tredwell over long-on for the only six of the match.

Earlier, Martin van Jaarsveld, resuming at an overnight 112, was bowled by Balcombe without addition and without playing a shot in the second over. But Kent went on to add 153 runs after resuming at 342-5, Geraint Jones scoring 63 andTredwell 62.

Warne took 4-134 in a marathon 44.3-over stint and Balcombe finished with 2-106.

KENT 495: Van Jaarsveld 112, Key 84, Jones 63, Tredwell 62, Warne 4-134, Balcombe 2-106; HAMPSHIRE 186-7: Carberry 46, Brown 42, Tredwell 4-46.

HAMPSHIRE 2 points, KENT 7.
