Record score for Hampshire
Michael Carberry
Thu, Jun 29 Hampshire v Middlesex
Hampshire rattled up 225-2, their highest-ever score in the Twenty20 Cup, as Middlesex were restricted to 166-9 in reply and brushed aside by 59 runs at The Rose Bowl on Thursday.
Michael Carberry and 19-year-old Mitchell Stokes gave Hampshire, who won the toss, a flying start with an inspired opening stand of 122 in 12 overs.
Top-scorer Carberry cracked 90 off 59 balls with seven fours and two sixes, while Stokes struck five sixes, including two over mid-wicket in the second over of the match, in making 62.
Dominic Thornely, who added a quickfire 90 with Carberry for the second wicket, kept up the high tempo with four sixes in an unbeaten 50.
Then Mascarenhas, who faced only two balls, took Hampshire's total of sixes to 13 by smashing the final two deliveries into the crowd.
Middlesex, who won the corresponding fixture last season, were quickly in trouble when their challenging run-chase began.
The dangerous Owais Shah, brilliantly run out by young Stokes, was the first of four prize wickets to fall in the first eight overs. Paul Weekes scored 49 and opener Ed Smith, fourth out at 66, made 34, but Hampshire's bowling and fielding was sharp.
Thornely completed a fine all-round performance by taking 3-30, while Chris Tremlett returned figures of 2-18 and Billy Taylor 2-48. Six catches were held.
HAMPSHIRE 225-2 (20 overs): Carberry 90, Stokes 62, Thornely 50 not out); MIDDLESEX 166-9 (20 overs): Weekes 49, Thornely 3-30, Tremlett 2-18, Taylor 2-48.
