CRAWLEY STARS AS HAMPSHIRE GO TOP

John Crawley scored a marvellous unbeaten 97 to steer Hampshire to the top of the NatWest Pro40 Division 1 table with a six-wicket win over Nottinghamshire under The Rose Bowl floodlights on Wednesday 1st July.

Named man-of-the-match, Crawley batted right through the Hampshire innings as they reached 218-4 to overhaul Notts' total of 214-8 with five balls to spare in front of a crowd of five-and-a-half thousand.

Notts, who won the toss in glorious sunshine, were indebted to a third-wicket stand of 95 between David Hussey (81) and Mark Wagh (46). But after reaching 197-3 in the 38th over they stumbled after the dangerous Hussey was brilliantly caught by Michael Lumb on the long-leg boundary. His was the first of five wickets to fall in the last three overs.

The lively Daren Powell continued to make a big impact at Hampshire by taking 3-48 and James Bruce returned figures of 2-27. Shane Warne held two slip catches, the second a sharp one-handed effort to dismiss rival captain Stephen Fleming for 23..

Batting under the lights, Hampshire then got off to a fine start in their victory chase. Crawley and Lumb, who smashed a raking six over long-on in scoring 53 off 47 balls, set them on their way with an opening stand of 88. Off-spinner Graeme Swann, who dismissed Lumb, went on to claim the first three wickets by snaring Sean Ervine and Chris Benham cheaply.

Samit Patel, one of four spinners used by Notts, followed up by bowling Michael Carberry to reduce Hampshire to 146-4, still 69 runs short of victory with 12 overs left.

But Crawley and Dimi Mascarenhas joined forces to steer Hampshire safely to their target which they reached with Crawley's 10th four in a 116-ball knock. Mascarenhas finished unbeaten on 32.

NOTTS 214-8 (40 overs): Hussey 81, Wagh 46, Powell 3-48, Bruce 2-27; HAMPSHIRE 218-4 (39.1 overs): Crawley 97 not out, Lumb 53, Mascarenhas 32 not out, Swann 3-22.

HAMPSHIRE won by six wickets.
