Hampshire slumped to a 10-run defeat

Thu, Jul 06  Hampshire v Surrey

Hampshire slumped to a 10-run defeat by Surrey in Monday's Twenty20 Cup match at The Rose Bowl after looking likely winners for most of the evening.

Surrey totalled 141-5 off their 20 overs after struggling to 56-5 in the 12th. Hampshire were then bowled out for 131 after losing their last four wickets for five runs in seven balls.

Billy Taylor and Dimi Mascarenhas bowled outstandingly for Hampshire, taking 2-16 and 0-11 respectively off their four overs and both producing a maiden, rare in this big-hitting competition.

When dangerman Ali Brown was fifth out for 28, brilliantly caught by Michael Carberry one-handed over his head on the long-on boundary, Surrey were in dire straits.

But Azhar Mahmood, the Pakistan international, then smashed an inspired unbeaten 65 off 30 balls as he and Scott Newman (20 not out) added 85 runs, including 52 off the last three overs.

Mahmood then struck in the opening over of Hampshire's reply, knocking Carberry's off stump out of the ground. But at 93-3 in the 13th over Hampshire were going well before top-scorer Chris Benham, batting at No.3, was out for 38, the first of four victims for left-arm spinner Nayan Doshi.

With two overs and four wickets left Hampshire were 16 runs from victory after Shaun Udal hit the previous delivery over long-on for six. But the skipper was promptly run out at the non-striker's end, to be followed in the same disastrous penultimate over by Greg Lamb, who made 30, and Chris Tremlett.

And when last man Taylor was run out at the start of the final over Hampshire had suffered a damaging defeat that leaves their hopes of reaching the Twenty20 Cup quarter-finals hanging by a thread.

SURREY 141-5 (20 overs): Mahmood 65 not out, Brown 28, Taylor 2-16, Udal 1-25, Mascarenhas 0-11; HAMPSHIRE 131 (19.1 overs): Benham 38, Lamb 30, Stokes 28, Doshi 4-30, Mahmood 2-25.
