The Rose Bowl
Summary
Match Drawn
Surrey Second XI: 487-5 d
Hampshire Second XI: 335 & 336-1
A high-scoring Surrey Second XI may have felt a bit aggrieved to have only come away from The Rose Bowl with a draw after a strong first innings total of 487 put them in a commanding position against the hosts.
Hampshire, falling 152 runs short of the visitors’ total with their first innings, were made to follow on, with only a strong unbeaten innings from local boy and Hants wicketkeeper Rory Burns (118*) to keep the score respectable.
But, in the end, strong second innings knocks from Liam Dawson (84), Benny Howell (138*) and Chris Benham (104*) earned the home side a draw as time ran out on the fixture.
With the ball, the highlight for Hampshire fans was seeing Simon Jones take two wickets for 52 and Liam Dawson 2 for 84 with both re-instating their credentials for a First XI re-call.
The result does little for either teams as Surrey look to extend their lead at the top of the table while Hampshire look to increase the distance between themselves and the bottom of it.
