CLARK STRIKES AS HAMPSHIRE REACH SEMI-FINALS
Hampshire will play Warwickshire in the semi-finals of the Friends Provident Trophy at The Rose Bowl next Wednesday after gaining a three-wicket home win over Surrrey to finish top of the Southern Conference.
Surrey did well to total 181 after crashing in disarray to 36-6. Despite losing four late wickets, Hampshire reached 182-7 with 10 balls to spare.
Australian Stuart Clark led the way for Hampshire with career-best one-day figures of 6-27, including five of the first six wickets, as Surrey captain Mark Ramprakash's decision to bat first backfired spectacularly.
Clark removed James Benning with the second ball of the match. Dimi Marcarenhas then bowled Ramprakash, who has been in tremendous form this season, for a first-ball duck.
But Surrey were revived by a battling seventh-wicket stand of 122 between Ricky Clarke (55) and No.8 Chris Schofield who finished with an unbeaten 75.
John Crawley, whose innings of 55 contained the only six of the match, and ex-Surrey man Michael Carberry (36) set Hampshire seemingly on their way to a straightforward victory.
But having reached 165-3 in the 45th over with a stand of 45 between Chris Benham (28) and Sean Ervine (25) Hampshire suddenly hit trouble. Four wickets fell for 15 runs in five overs before victory was achieved.
SURREY 181 (49.5 overs): Schofield 75 not out, Clarke 62, Clark 6-27. HAMPSHIRE 182-7 (49.2 overs): Crawley 55, Carberry 36, Nicholson 2-27, Clarke 2-40.
HAMPSHIRE won by three wickets.
