Lumb goes for Hampshire
(ECB Match Report)
Hampshire lost Michael Lumb on a cold and drizzly third morning at the Rose Bowl - but still appeared likely to establish a minor first-innings lead against champions Sussex.
Lumb could add only five runs to his overnight 77 as his partnership with Greg Lamb ended on 80 out of 319 for seven in 40 minutes’ play, after play had begun almost half-an-hour late in this LV County Championship Division One match.
The rain returned shortly after midday, forcing the players off for the first time on what seemed sure to be a regularly interrupted day.
When Lumb lost his balance slightly and went lbw trying to push an innocuous ball from Robin Martin-Jenkins to leg, it was the ninth time he had fallen between 50 and 100 in his short Hampshire career so far.
While the left-hander’s search for a maiden championship hundred for his current employers goes on, it was left initially to Lamb and Dimitri Mascarenhas to put their team in credit in reply to 332 all out.
It looked as though Mascarenhas might get no further than three - when Sussex claimed a catch by Michael Yardy, diving in at silly point to collect an edge off an attempted sweep at Mushtaq Ahmed.
But the umpires could not be sure the ball had carried.
As light rain set in the full covers appeared and an early lunch was taken.
No play resumed in the afternoon and the final decision to abandon the days play was taken after a late inspection after tea.
Match due to start on Day 4 at 11:00am
