Middlesex 2nd XI v Hampshire 2nd XI at Vine Lane, Uxbridge 9,10 and 11 May 2007

Middlesex won the toss and batted first.  A familiar sounding pair of names in Hutton (Ben) and Compton (Nick)  opened the innings and began brightly until David Griffiths removed Hutton’s middle stump with the total at 41 in the 12th over.  Eoin Morgan, back from Ireland duties in the Caribbean, added 75 for the 3rd wicket before Compton was held at slip by Greg Lamb off the bowling of Shaun Udal.  Hampshire gradually got on top and Middlesex reached 181 for 6 before Darwen and O’Brien came together for the 7th wicket.  32 overs were lost due to rain and bad light.  A t the end of the first day, Middlesex had scored 225 for 6 in 72 overs.

On the second day, O’Brien made 43 in a stand of 102 with Darwen, before he was LBW to Griffiths and shortly after  Darwen reached his century, Middlesex declared at 340 for 7.  Darwen who plays his club cricket at Ealing reached his century from 98 balls. Shaun Udal took 3 for 60 in 25 overs and he was well supported by David Griffiths with 3 for 72 .

In reply Hampshire had reached 34-0 in 8 overs at lunch.  Rain began and got steadily heavier and prevented further play on the second day – 73 overs were lost to the rain.

The captains Shaun Udal and Ben Scott agreed at the start of the third morning to create an enterprising day’s play with a view to achieving a positive result.  Hampshire declared at their overnight score, Middlesex scored 25 for 0 in 3.1 overs and Hampshire were set 332 in a possible 84 overs.

Against some steady bowling they reached lunch at 54-0 after 22 overs.  Michael Carberry and Kevin Latouf took the opening partnership to 123 before Latouf was caught for 62.  Tom Burrows and Carberry added 96 for the fourth wicket as Hampshire kept up the run chase.  Burrows making 23 which included 2 sixes.  Carberry reached his century from 116 balls in 129 minutes, an innings which included 1 six and 13 fours.  He was eventually out for 157, adding a further 7 fours, with the score at 277 for 5 with 18 overs remaining.  With his dismissal, the Middlesex bowlers increased pressure as Hampshire pressing for a win, declined the offer of bad light.   But with Hutton and Peploe each claiming three wickets Hampshire were reduced to 309 for 9 when rain and bad light brought an end to a very entertaining final day when either side could have achieved a victory.

Hampshire took 7 points and Middlesex 8 with the match drawn.

Scores:
Middlesex 340-9 Dec (Darwen 100*) and 25-0 Dec
Hampshire 34-0 Dec and 309 for 9 (Carberry 157, Latouf 62)
