Carberry magic guides Hants home

BBC Match Report

County Championship D1, Rose Bowl, day four: Hampshire 23-1d & 331-5 bt Warwickshire 353-5d & forfeit by five wickets
Points: Hampshire 15, Warwickshire 4

Michael Carberry hit a magnificent unbeaten 192 to guide Hampshire to a five-wicket win over Warwickshire.

The Bears declared on their overnight 353-5 and forfeited their second innings, after Hants slogged 23 off 11 balls, to set up a target of 331.

Carberry, who crashed 24 boundaries and a six in his 281-ball knock, shared 117 with Chris Benham (40) before upping the scoring with Dimi Mascarenhas.

Mascarenhas finished on 38 as victory was achieved with three balls to spare.

It was Carberry's highest first-class score but Hants made an uncertain start after captains Shane Warne and Darren Maddy agreed to make a game of a rain-ravaged affair.

Michael Brown was bowled by James Anyon for 10 and Maddy removed John Crawley for the same score to make it 47-2.

When Benham was run out, the hosts were still in charge with 103 needed off 27 overs but Nic Pothas was run out for 12 after a mix-up with Carberry and Mascarenhas and Carberry rebuilt slowly.

Six were needed off the final over and Tim Groenewald bowled a no-ball to give Hampshire the winning run and their third Championship victory of the season.
