LUMB AND ERVINE INSPIRE HAMPSHIRE

A masterly second-wicket stand of 147 between Michael Lumb and Sean Ervine powered Hampshire to a crushing eight-wicket win over Warwickshire in Wednesday's NatWest Pro40 League match under The Rose Bowl floodlights.

Having restricted Warwickshire to 196-8 off their 40 overs, Hampshire swept to 197-2 in reply with 10.4 overs to spare.

Opener Jonathan Trott, fourth out for 90, top-scored for Warwickshire and put on 69 with skipper Darren Maddy (30) for the first wicket.

But Hampshire's tight bowling prevented their opponents from stepping up the tempo and prospering after reaching 134-1 after 27 overs. The last eight overs contained a six and not a single four.

Billy Taylor led the way for Hampshire with figures of 3-33 off eight overs and there were two wickets apiece for Sean Ervine and Shaun Udal, the latter bowling the dangerous Trott. John Crawley held two fine catches.

Hampshire's reply started with an opening stand of 44 before Crawley was out for 14. That brought in Ervine to join Lumb and the two left-handers were soon unstoppable as they smacked the Warwickshire bowling to all parts.

Lumb, named man-of-the-match, slammed 82 off 73 balls with 12 fours and a six before being caught low down at mid-off by Heath Streak, once of Hampshire, to make it 191-2. Ervine finished with an unbeatan 80 off 77 balls, having hit 13 fours.

WARWICKS 196-8 (40 overs): Trott 90, Taylor 3-33, Udal 2-31, Ervine 2-48; HAMPSHIRE 197-2 (29.2 overs): Lumb 82, Ervine 80 not out, Anyon 2-51.

HAMPSHIRE won by eight wickets.

*Hampshire v Surrey LVCC match begins on Thurday 30th August at 11:30am due to the late Pro40 finish on Wednesday. Day 2 on Friday 31st will start at 10:30am. Normal late season start at 11:00am on Days 3 and 4.
