Second XI Lose to Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire win by 8 wickets
Hampshire 2nd XI v Gloucestershire 2nd XI
Second Eleven Championship
Start: Tuesday, April 27 2010 at Rose Bowl Nursery
Summary - Day Two
Gloucestershire win by 8 wickets.
Hampshire: 121 and 197
Gloucestershire: 242 and 80 - 2
Day Two:
A spirited second innings from Liam Dawson (52) and Australian wicketkeeper-batsman, Michael Johnson (72) weren't enough to stop Hampshire's Second XI falling to an eight wicket defeat at the hands of Gloucestershire yesterday.
Already 121 runs behind following a Gloucestershire 1st innings total of 242, Hampshire were always facing an up-hill battle on Day Two of their Second XI Championship match.
And things didn’t start well for the home side when they lost opener, Benny Howell for 0 and his replacement at the crease, Hamza Riazuddin for 14; Hampshire now 35 - 2.
Despite that, Dawson and Johnson put on a fine stand of 80 to haul their team back up to 115 – 3, but shortly before levelling the scores, Hants lost their third wicket.
Today, as yesterday, the fearsome bowling of Gloucestershire spinner, Vikram Banerjee (4 – 27) was a problem for Hampshire’s lower order. He finished with a match total of 9 wickets off 23.4 overs, conceding just 52 runs in the process.
And before they could reach the 50-over mark, Hampshire were all out for 197, leaving Gloucestershire a target of just 77 runs to win.
Leg spinner, Jamie Miller and Hampshire Academy graduate, 17 year-old seam bowler, Jack Sheppard tried their best, taking 2 for 47, but in the end the hard work of opener Rob Woodman (30) and Mike O’Shea (25*) ensured Gloucestershire crossed the line in fewer than 20 overs.
Hampshire Seconds will now look to bounce back against Northamptonshire when they travel to Milton Keynes for Championship and Trophy matches at the beginning of May.
Day One:
A disappointing day for Hampshire's Second XI saw the team reach just 121 against Gloucestershire at the Rose Bowl.
Despite a half century for Benny Howell (53), the rest of the batting order struggled to cope with the left-arm spin of Vikram Banerjee, who took 5 wickets off 65 deliveries.
After fewer than 40 overs, the whole team was out and Gloucestershire took to the crease.
Lead by David Balcombe, the bowling attack started promisingly, taking two quick wickets for 21 and 77 respectively. Ashfaq Afridi – brother of Shahid and trialist at Hampshire – also impressed with 3 wickets off 66 deliveries.
But as the afternoon progressed the Gloucestershire batsmen starting picking up the run-rate as opener Rob Woodman reached 56 and others scored into the 20’s.
By the end of play the visitors had reached 205 for 7. Plenty of work to do for Hampshire when the match resumes at 11:00 today.
