Chris Wood returned County 2nd XI record figures of 9 wickets for 48 runs in this Second Eleven Championship match against Kent to help Hampshire to an innings and 7 runs victory.
The figures beat John Southern's previous best of 8-23 v Somerset at Brislington in 1979 and are the 12th best figures ever in the history of the competition.
More importantly, however, the win meant 22 points for the team, who move off the bottom of the table and above their hosts.
David Balcombe might feel a little disgruntled at having his excellent first innings return of 6 for 38 overshadowed.
Indeed the whole bowling attack had performed excellently to limit Kent to a meagre 109 in little over 50 overs.
Cue: a big performance from the Hampshire batsmen. And that’s exactly what came, most notably from West Indian right-handed batsman and off-spin bowler, Simon Steel, who scored 95 not out.
The team finished on 235 leaving the hosts needing 126 just to draw level. Even that proved a score too much for them, as Wood ripped his way through the Kent batsmen, clean bowling five and trapping two lbw.

Wood took 12 wickets in total in the match
The performance is sure to leave Woody knocking on the door of an LV= County Championship debut, which, were it to come in the First XI’s next match at home to Lancashire next week, would mean he would miss the Second XI’s next match – a friendly against the Royal Navy on Thursday.
The Second XI’s next Championship match is against top-of-the-table, Surrey at The Rose Bowl on Monday 2nd August.
