Hughes to Make Championship Debut
Hughes made his Royals debut against Kent Spitfires on Sunday
A look ahead to Hampshire's LV= County Championship match against Lancashire at Aigburth, Liverpool.
Lancashire v Hampshire
LV= County Championship Division 1
Start: Tuesday 31st August (11.00)
Aigburth, Liverpool
Bowler David Balcombe and batsman, Michael Carberry are included in the thirteen-man squad that travels to Liverpool despite both having slight fitness concerns. Both will undergo morning assessments to confirm their availability, while Chris Wood and Liam Dawson also travel with the squad as potential replacements. A start for the former would mark his County Championship debut.
Hampshire also have newcomer, Phil Hughes available. The Australian impressed on debut scoring 32 and taking a fine diving catch against the Kent Spitfires in their Clydesdale Bank 40 match at The Rose Bowl on Sunday. Tuesday’s match will mark his first class debut for his new club.
Meanwhile, Neil McKenzie is expected to make his final appearance for Hampshire as he travels to South Africa at the weekend to play for the Highveld Lions in the Champions League.
Manager Giles White said; “[Liverpool] is generally a result wicket, which suits us so we’ll go there with high hopes.
“We’ve got Phil Hughes with us now and Neil McKenzie so our batting is strong and hopefully we can put some runs on the board. If we can also do the right things with the ball and put it in good areas we can get the right result.”
The Opposition:
Lancashire are two places above Hampshire in the table and still in with an outside chance of claiming the Championship title. However, they will have to have something of a reversal of fortunes, having lost two out of their three Championship matches since these two teams drew at The Rose Bowl a month ago.
If Hampshire are to get a result this time, they’ll probably have to keep batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul quiet: he’s registered innings scores of 92 (v Notts), 120 (v Kent) and 67 (v Durham) since scoring 118 in his first innings at The Rose Bowl.
The hosts will be without wicket-keeper Luke Sutton, who announced he was leaving the club after five seasons there last Friday. Gareth Cross will take over wicket-keeping duty permanently for the Red Rose.
