NEW BOY DAWSON SHINES IN DEFEAT
Despite Michael Carberry scoring a superb unbeaten 75 and new boy Liam Dawson shining on his debut, Hampshire suffered a five-wicket defeat in Monday's NatWest Pro40 League match at Northampton.
Hampshire, without injured skipper Shane Warne, totalled 225-9 after being put in to bat and bottom-of-the-table Northants finished on 228-5 with an over to spare.
Left-hander Carberry, batting at No.4 for Hampshire, shared a third-wicket stand of 60 with opener John Crawley (48) and added 64 for the sixth wicket with 17-year-old all-rounder Liam Dawson who made a confident, eye-catching 32 off 31 balls on his debut. Dawson, an England Under-19 player, came through the Hampshire Academy and hails from Calne in Wiltshire.
Richard Logan, the former Hampshire pace bowler, took 4-47. Crawley was his first victim, caught on the third-man boundary.
In reply, Northants recovered from 51-2 before slipping from 130-2 to 161-5 in the 33rd over, two of the wickets falling to off-spinner Shaun Udal who finished with 2-30 off eight overs. But their captain David Sales was still there and his fine knock of 92 not out took the match away from Hampshire
Big-hitting Lance Klusener scored an unbeaten 36 in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 67 with Sales and it was Klusener who smacked the winning boundary off the last ball of the penultimate over. Hampshire used six bowlers, including young Dawson's left-arm spin and seamer Billy Taylor who was recalled after a seven-week absence.
HAMPSHIRE 225-9 (40 overs): Carberry 75 not out, Crawley 48, Dawson 32, Logan 4-47, Lucas 3-43; NORTHANTS 228-5 (39 overs): Sales 92 not out, Peters 54, Klusener 36 not out, Udal 2-30.
NORTHANTS won by five wickets.
