Nottinghamshire v Hampshire NatWest Pro40 20th July

Report from Trent Bridge from BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James

Hampshire lost their opening Pro 40 game of the season at Nottinghamshire, where the home sides total of 231-9 proved too much.

Despite a good pitch and a short boundary on one side, Hampshire fell 31 runs short on 200-9.

Having won the toss, Nottinghamshire got off to a flying start thanks to Graeme Swann's swashbuckling 31 off just 21 balls at the top of the order, before Chris Tremlett trapped him LBW off a full delivery.

Notts innings were built around a solid fifth wicket partnership of 93 between Australian Adam Voges (85), who played for Hants last year in the Twenty20 competition, and Bilat Shafayat (45) in 15 overs.

Hampshire debutant Imran Tahir, the Pakistan 'A' leg spinner, bowled with great control on a good Trent Bridge batting surface, finishing with economical figures of 1-25 off his eight overs.

Chris Tremlett picked up 3-54.

Hampshire's batting currently lacks a bit of confidence, and it showed at the top of the order.  Needing a good start, John Crawley and Michael Carberry were both dismissed inside the first 19 runs.

Michael Lumb though overcame a nervy start and found his timing as he hit 63 off 66 balls.  When the left hander became the fifth man out with the score on 97, Hampshire found the going difficult against the all spin attack of Graeme Swann (3-27) and Samit Patel.

Captain Dimi Mascarenhas did his best near the end hitting 51 not out off 35 balls.  But he was running out of partners, and by the time the last over came around, Hampshire were 194-9, and the game was gone.  As consolation, Dimi hit the final delivery from Mark Ealham for six.

Imran Tahir told BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James:

"We lost some early wickets which made a big difference in the game.  We needed at least 60 off the first 10 overs for our opening partnership, but it wasn't to be.  The wicket was a good one, if a bit slow.  But I was pleased with my first performance.  It came out alright, but it was a bit windy and a bit cold for me"

Hampshire's next home match is against the Lancashire Lightni
ngs on the 3rd August.
