Warne and Carberry shatter Surrey

Sun, Jun 04  Surrey v Hampshire

Shane Warne and Michael Carberry produced virtuoso performances to inspire Hampshire to a runaway eight-wicket victory over Surrey in Sunday's Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy match at Whitgift School, Croydon.

Surrey, who were put in to bat, were dismissed for 166 in the 41st of their 50 overs. Hampshire then stormed to a winning 167-2 with 24 overs to spare.

Incredibly, Hampshire's vibrant performance came after the team coach pulled in to their nearby hotel just before 3 o'clock that morning following a nightmare trip from Leeds where they had scored a monumental 404-5 to beat Yorkshire in the Liverpool Victoria County Championship.

Skipper Shane Warne returned figures of 6-42 against Surrey, the leg-spinner's best in limited-overs cricket, and snapped up the last six wickets in just 20 balls at a cost of 14 runs.

Surrey's dramatic collapse from 120-3 was triggered by the run out of Mark Butcher, their captain, for 77. Shaun Udal made a superb diving stop off his own bowling from a straight-drive by Butcher who was left stranded halfway down the track as Udal, still on his knees, broke the stumps.

Opening bowler Billy Taylor took a wicket with the second ball of the match and finished with 2-21 off seven overs. Wicketkeeper Nic Pothas pulled off two stumpings--including Jon Batty for 35--and a fine one-handed catch, while Greg Lamb held three catches.

Hampshire then made mincemeat of their victory target. The inspired Carberry, who belted 88 off 84 balls with nine fours and six sixes, shared an opening stand of 127 in 20 overs with John Crawley whose 49 contained several exquisite off-drives and a six back over the bowler.

After Crawley clipped a catch to mid-wicket, Hampshire powered on to 149 before Carberry, playing against his first county, was denied a richly-deserved century by Tim Murtagh's stunning catch over his head at mid-off.

Sean Ervine was left unbeaten on 22 at the finish and Nayan Doshi, the Surrey left-arm spinner, claimed both wickets--though his seven overs were hammered for 63 runs!

Afterwards, Shane Warne heaped praise on the Hampshire team. "The boys played pretty well considering they were on the coach for seven or eight hours. Everyone was feeling a bit weary after four days at Headingley and we didn't have much sleep, but it was a really good job by all the team."

SURREY 166 (40.2 overs) Butcher 77, Warne 6-42, Taylor 2-21) HAMPSHIRE 167-2 (26 overs) Carberry 88, Crawley 49.

* Second-placed Hampshire now trail Sussex by just a point in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy South Conference, though the leaders have a match in hand. Hampshire's next match in the competition is a crucial clash with Sussex under the floodlights at Hove on Friday, June 16
