Surrey 2nd XI v Hampshire 2nd XI June 6th
A stirring last day performance enabled Hampshire to pull off a convincing win at the Brit Oval against Surrey. Hampshire’s second string batsman gave a convincing performance after winning the toss, led by captain Chris Benham with 123, ably supported by Sean Ervine with 95 in 91 balls. There were also half centuries for Liam Dawson (56) and Greg Lamb (54*) in a first day total of 430 – 6 declared at almost 5 an over.
Surrey’s reply wobbled at 85 – 3 but a fine century from Richard Clinton, supported by youngster Chris Jordan enabled the home side to declare 106 behind on 324 – 8. James Tomlinson 3-82, David Griffiths 2-62, James Bruce 2-43, & Mitchell Stokes 1-6 were the Hampshire wicket takers.
Hampshire steadily lost wickets on the last day chasing quick runs for a declaration, Kevin Latouf top scoring with 61 as they declared on 238-7, setting the home side 345 to win at 5 an over on a flat pitch with a short boundary.
Nobody could predict that Surrey would crash to a paltry 87 all out. David Griffiths (2-10 in 6 overs) gave Hampshire a perfect start by removing Rory Hamilton-Brown and captain Stuart Walters early on with successive balls. Surrey never recovered and showed little application as the ball swung and began to turn sharply during the humid afternoon. Opener Alan Cope was the only batsman to show much fight being last out for a dogged 25 as the wickets were shared between the seamers Tomlinson (1-13), Ervine (1-15) and Griffiths before tea and spinners Lamb (4-17 in 10 overs) and young Dawson (2-12 in 9 overs) after tea as Hampshire won comfortably with 21 overs to spare.
