Surrey's worst season in their history continued with an innings loss against title hopefuls Hampshire in their LV County Championship Division One match at The Brit Oval.
Defeat by an innings and 122 runs leaves Surrey without a win this year and virtually condemns them to Second Division cricket next season after being bowled out for 148 in their second innings with Dimitri Mascarenhas taking 4-13.
After being dismissed for 210 in their first innings, Surrey lost five second-innings wickets for 14 runs in nine overs thanks to magnificent spells from Mascarenhas and his Chris Tremlett, who finished with 3-28.
Victory sent Hampshire to the top of the table, a remarkable turnaround given that they were bottom of the table before the signing of Imran Tahir two months ago.
Beginning the second innings 270 runs behind, Surrey suffered a blow in the 10th over when Matthew Spriegel was trapped leg before for four by Mascarenhas.
Despite Scott Newman making 51 – his second half-century of the match – he was the third wicket to fall when he edged to slip. James Benning had fallen to Mascarenhas the previous over for just six.
Mark Ramprakash was smartly caught by Michael Brown for 11 and in the next over Tremlett accounted for Jon Batty, caught at slip driving at an outswinger.
Alex Tudor fell in similar fashion in Tremlett’s next over to complete a pair and leave Surrey reeling on 75 for six.
Usman Afzaal and Saqlain Mushtaq delayed the inevitable with a resolute stand of 53 in 23 overs before Saqlain missed a straight one from James Tomlinson.
Tremlett struck on his return, having Jade Dernbach caught behind off an outside edge for just four, and Tomlinson (3-58) took the wickets of Shoaib Akhtar and Pedro Collins.
Earlier, resuming the final day on 171 for seven, Surrey added a further 12 runs before losing their first wicket of the day when Liam Dawson snapped up Dernbach in his first over.
The prized wicket of Ramprakash fell to spinner Tahir, who deceived the Surrey skipper with some late turn and bowled him for 61.
Shoaib smashed Dawson for 22 in an over before Dawson wrapped up the innings with the wicket of Collins for four.
