HAMPSHIRE CRASH TO HEAVY DEFEAT
Hampshire crashed to a 135-run defeat in their Friends Provident Trophy match against Essex at Chelmsford on Sunday.
Replying to Essex's 210-7 off 50 overs, Hampshire were shot out for 75 in just 24.5 overs. It was their lowest score ever in the competition..
Essex, who won the toss, were themselves in deep trouble at 58-5 as new-ball pair Chris Tremlett and James Bruce both snapped up two wickets. Tremlett, back from injury, also ran out Ravi Bopara with a direct hit.
But James Foster, who top-scored with an unbeaten 69, led the fightback as 152 runs were added. Foster and Jamie Middlebrook (37 not out) shared an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 61.
Hampshire's fielding was excellent, John Crawley and Jimmy Adams both holding superb catches and Greg Lamb pulling off several quality stops. Adams also claimed his first wicket for the county in limited-overs cricket.
Hampshire's innings started disastrously. Nic Pothas departed in the opening over and was quickly followed by Chris Benham, Mitchell Stokes and Crawley, who played the ball onto his stumps, as the score lurched to 18-4 with paceman Graham Napier picking up three wickets.
Adams, top scorer for Hampshire with 23, and Michael Lumb lifted the total to 40-4 before the last six wickets fell for 35 runs.
ESSEX 210-7 (50 overs): Foster 69 not out, Cook 37, Middlebrook 37 not out, Bruce 2-39, Tremlett 2-44. HAMPSHIRE 75 (24.5 overs): Adams 23, Bopara 3-13, Napier 3-16. ESSEX win by 135 runs.
