Sussex beat Hampshire at Arundel

ECB Match Report

Robin Martin-Jenkins claimed three wickets in the afternoon session to steer Sussex to a 166-run victory over Hampshire in the LV County Championship Division One at Arundel.

Martin-Jenkins finished with figures of 3-21 after claiming the vital wicket of Dimitri Mascarenhas, who had shared a stand of 64 with Nic Pothas and offered dogged resistance.

Resuming on 224 for four after lunch, the visitors lost John Crawley, who had made a vital 44 without any further score.

After Masceranhas fell on 288, Hampshire lost their last four wickets for just 19 runs.

Martin-Jenkins had Shane Warne lbw (16), Shaun Udal was out for a duck, Chris Tremlett was Martin-Jenkins’ third victim before Mushtaq Ahmed bowled Stuart Clark for six as the visitors were all out for 333.

Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Luke Wright and Mushtaq Ahmed all claimed a brace of wickets for the champions.

Leaders Yorkshire were being thwarted by Kent pair James Tredwell and Andrew Hall as Darren Gough made a shock recall to the bowling line-up at Tunbridge Wells.

The Yorkshire skipper had broken a bone in his hand on Friday after finishing with his best figures for nine years and an initial prognosis gave Gough a month out of the game.

However, he was back within 24 hours and needed just six deliveries to remove out-of-favour England wicket-keeper Geraint Jone

The hosts resumed after lunch on 236 for five as they attempted to play out the game and avoid defeat.

After Jones was out with seven more runs on the board, Tredwell and Hall teamed up to offer dogged resistance and shared an unbeaten stand of 94.

Tredwell was a career-best 92 not out and Hall was unbeaten on 43 as Kent reached 337 for six at tea - a lead of 78 with four wickets intact.

Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan had claimed two wickets in the morning session.

Worcestershire were on the brink of victory after Surrey lost two more wickets in the afternoon session at New Road.

Resuming on 133 for five - still 198 runs adrift - the visitors moved on to 179 before Azhar Mahmood was lbw to Kabir Ali for 44.

Rikki Clarke then became Gareth Batty’s third victim of the day and Mark Butcher and Kyle Hogg appeared to be delaying the inevitable with Surrey on 235 for seven - a deficit of 96 with just three wickets intact.

Durham were struggling against Lancashire at the Riverside after they lost a further four wickets after lunch for the addition of just 60 runs.

Resuming on 76 for two, the hosts lost Kyle Coetzer with no further runs on the board before Will Smith (28), Scott Styris (19) and Dale Benkenstein (21) - Muttiah Muralitharan’s sixth victim of the game - all fell.

At tea, Durham were 149 for six with Lancashire intent on wrapping up victory.

In Division Two, Essex were on the brink of victory after Northamptonshire lost six wickets in the afternoon session.

Danish Kaneria had figures of 4-95 as the visitors to Chelmsford reached tea on 312 for eight - still trailing by 96 runs with only two wickets remaining.
