Update from Cape Town

Hampshire have had a successful start to their pre-season tour to South Africa after recording impressive victories over Cape Cobras and Leeds-Bradford MCCU.

In a 40 over per side game at Newlands, Hampshire took on sister side, the Cape Cobras, (soon to become Cape Royals as part of Royals 2020). The impressive Cobras side included four South African internationals, Andrew Puttick, Monde Zondeki, Vernon Philander and ex-Hampshire player Rory Kleinveldt. They also included Hampshire Academy player Matthew Kleinveldt in the side to take on his former team-mates. Hampshire included Kabir Ali for his first appearance for the side along with England Under-19 trio, Danny Briggs, Chris Wood and James Vince.

In their allotted 40 overs, the Cape Cobras reached 178/8, Puttick top scoring with 82. Chris Wood impressed with 3/42 form 8 overs while Hamza Riazuddin caused problems with 2/18 off seven overs. David Griffiths, Kabir Ali and Danny Briggs also chipped in with a wicket apiece.

In response Jimmy Adams and James Vince set upon the all-international bowling attack of the Cape Cobras with a opening partnership of 102. The second match of the tour saw Hampshire take on Leeds-Bradford MCCU at Western Province CC. The game saw Hampshire use 12 players, including youngsters Michael Bates and Jack Shepherd. Another strong opening partnership saw Liam Dawson and Chris Benham put on a quickfire 69 with Benham falling for 28 and Dawson soon following for 52 off 47 balls including two sixes.
