Vince Named as Under 19 Vice Captain
James Vince’s reputation has been enhanced further after he was named as England’s Vice Captain for the forthcoming ICC Under 19 World Cup.
Vince will act as understudy to skipper Azeem Rafiq as the young lions look to win the competition for the first time since 1998. Yorkshire’s off-spinning all rounder praised the qualities of Vince and believes the Hampshire players will play a prominent part in England’s bid for success.
"We have a lot of talent in this team, there is no doubt about that," Rafiq said.
"I think we are a well balanced side. We’ve got a couple of very experienced batters and James Vince did brilliantly in County cricket last year. Bowling-wise, Danny Briggs and I are the leading spinners and we both have County experience.
"A lot of the lads are pretty experienced now and I have plenty of help around me. I just want to get the best out of the lads because it’s all about England winning the World Cup; that’s what we will be judged on."
Hampshire First Team Manager Giles White was delighted at the news. "To be offered the role of vice captain during the Under 19 World Cup reflects his standing amongst the group. It will be a good opportunity for James to develop his leadership skills."
A successful tournament both personally and as a team will see the prodigious James Vince take another significant step to stardom. Alongside Vince and Briggs, wicketkeeper batsman Michael Bates completes the Hampshire representation in the squad.
