White Optimistic Over Injured Trio
Dan Christian should play despite a ball in the face against Somerset
The Hampshire manager says Cork, Ervine and Christian should be fit for Friends Provident t20 Finals Day.
Giles White praised Hampshire’s fighting spirit after his injury ravaged side secured an important draw with Somerset in the County Championship at Taunton.
After the result, which leaves Hampshire 6th in Division One, White said “It’s been a hard game for us and we had a lot to contend with. I thought the guys showed a lot of character to get out what they got from this game, we had lots of injuries but I’m very proud and we look forward to Saturday”.
Those injuries include Michael Lumb - who will now be out of action for six weeks due to a fractured foot - Dominic Cork and Sean Ervine who both picked up back injuries and Dan Christian who was struck on the face by a Zander de Bruyn bouncer.
While Lumb will definitely miss this Saturday’s Twenty20 final’s day at The Rose Bowl, the fate of the trio of all rounder’s is uncertain after their respective injuries.
White said: “We’re hopeful that those guys will be involved on Saturday, we’re not 100% sure but we’ve got to have a look at it and see where we are.
“We don’t think they’re serious injuries at this stage but we’re not sure”
Christian, despite being struck early in his innings went on to record his highest first class score for Hampshire of 38, and White was keen to praise the Australian’s moral fiber.
“He epitomized what we had shown in the whole game, we showed character at a very important time.
“If we can keep doing that then we’ll have a fighting chance of staying up, every point is vital and we’ll be looking for more fighting performances and hopefully scrap away and get some points”.
The Hampshire first-team manager added that Liam Dawson, Simon Jones, Hamza Riazuddin and Chris Benham would all be included in the Royals’ squad for Saturday.
