Yorkshire struggle
ECB Match Report
Yorkshire’s batsmen had a miserable time of it in between the showers on the first day of their final LV County Championship match of the season against Hampshire at Headingley Carnegie.
When the fifth and final stoppage ended play for the day they were struggling on 161 for seven after 52.3 overs, having won the toss.
Joe Sayers was a late replacement in the Yorkshire side for Anthony McGrath, who missed the game because of a calf strain, but the left-hander was unable to profit from his unexpected recall.
The hosts lost a wicket to the second ball of the match from James Bruce, which Andrew Gale edged to wicket-keeper Nic Pothas, and Sayers fell to Sean Ervine with the score on 17, neatly taken by Shane Warne low down at second slip.
England Test captain Michael Vaughan, coming in at the fall of the first wicket, began to play himself in along with Inzamam-ul-Haq, but when he had made 26 Vaughan edged David Balcombe into his stumps to leave Yorkshire 45 for three.
One run later, just after the first stoppage for light rain, the Ervine-Warne combination struck again as South African Jacques Rudolph edged to slip.
Either side of two further interruptions, Inzamam and Gerard Brophy added 76 for the fifth wicket and a glorious forcing shot off the back foot brought Inzamam his first championship half-century for Yorkshire, off 82 balls with nine fours.
But the next delivery from Bruce was a shooter which thudded into the former Pakistan captain’s pads and saw him depart lbw.
Brophy, partnered by Adil Rashid, moved into the 40s, helped by two consecutive boundaries off Bruce, but he edged Balcombe to Michael Lumb at first slip, where the former Yorkshire player held a straightforward catch.
Yorkshire slumped to 156 for seven in the 49th over when Rashid, attempting to withdraw his bat, played on to give Bruce his third wicket.
Tim Bresnan and captain Darren Gough held out before a fifth break for rain ended play for the day.
